Executive Charisma: Six Steps to Mastering the Art of Leadership

Book Review

A new step was added in my grow up routine: Write a review from some books or audio books, so let's start with the first one:

Audio book: Executive Charisma: Six Steps to Mastering the Art of Leadership.

I don't want to write a new Charisma definition, so I just want to use part of the Wikipedia definition: compelling attractiveness or charm.

Next definition is part of this book: Executive Charisma is the ability to gain effective responses from others by using aware actions and considerate civility in order to get useful things done. Now makes sense the relation between the first definition and the reference this book tries to give us adding the "executive" part.

The key concepts of this book are based on giving us tools that allow us to properly use this charisma to do a better job as leaders because in a leadership position, it's not enough to have technical knowledge and skills, we also need some interpersonal skills, so let's review some of these key concepts:

  • Integrity: We need to maintain a clear moral compass.

  • Confidence: Although sometimes it's difficult, we must maintain confidence in oneself and in others.

  • Full disclosure: Be accurate, open, and clear in your communication.

This book mentions seven practices and in each of them add recommendations in an interesting and clear way.

Take the initiative is one of them and the message is we need to be willing to take opportunities and be proactive in doing so.

Other one is Ask Questions, and it explains is a way (not the only one) to acquire information from others.

Ask for Favors is an interesting practice because it seems to me it takes humility to accept that we will not always be the experts in something, and we also need help.

We need to be deliberate in our actions and it takes time to prepare in advance what we want to show others. Slow Down, Be Quiet, and Listen to Others is the key and stillness and steadiness can show a sense of maturity and purposefulness.

This audio book is approximately 19 minutes long and concisely and directly gives us recommendations to develop new skills and have a better executive charisma.
